Vicissitude (noun)

a change of circumstances or fortune, typically one that is unwelcome or unpleasant.

The fortune and fame that came with the winning of the International Crotchet Olympics became too much to handle. Caroline swiftly noticed the vicissitudes after her friends and competitors stopped talking to her out of jealousy, while peers and strangers only spoke to her to for needling tips, free doilies, and of course to “borrow” from her newfound wealth. The dark underbelly of the professional crochet realm is one ne’er spoken of, but perhaps one that is in dire need of a reforming spotlight.
